Reading Workshop in Our Classroom

Reading Workshop is one of my favorite times of the day! For an hour and a half, we get to explore different genres of text and learn how to be successful readers. I believe whole-heartedly that this is a great way to teach reading. The workshop model always starts with a team activating strategy to get student minds going. This is followed by me modeling a reading strategy. During this time, students observe me as I think aloud, and then get to turn and talk to each other about their observations and thinking. Students are then invited to continue their learning by practicing with me and the rest of the class. Then, students practice the skill or strategy independently or sometimes with a reading partner on their own personal reading level. Finally, it ends with a fun activity where students get to share their thinking/new learning with others in the class.

Cooperative Learning in Our Classroom

Cooperative learning is a HUGE part of our learning in this classroom. We use Kagan strategies everyday in every subject. This is a great way for students to have fun learning together. It not only teaches students how to work with others, but it gives them the opportunity to learn from each other and see another point of view.

Math Workshop in Our Classroom

Our math workshop is modeled the same as our reading workshop. The lesson begins with a Problem of the Day that activates student prior knowledge to help them persevere in solving it (this is done independently). Students then discuss their thinking in their cooperative groups, agreeing and disagreeing with each other's process. After this problem is broken down whole group, we begin our lesson for the day, referring to the lesson essential question to guide our practice. I model strategies, then students practice in their books with me, and finally they practice independently. During this time, I observe student progress and bring it back to whole group or small groups as needed.

Interactive Science Notebooks in our Classroom
IMG_8809.JPG

Having students create year-long interactive science notebooks is essential to their learning science. It is a fun and creative way to involve students in their own learning of the world around them. The notebook is organized into Left Side and Right Side thinking, just like our brain! On the Left Side, the teacher gives notes, handouts or cloze sentence notes, teaching the new material (my students call this side the "boring side"). On the Right Side, the students get to be creative to show me what they have learned in the day's lesson. They can do this in ANY way (drawings/cartoons, poems, songs, cut-outs, comic strips..etc). Clearly they call this side the "fun side". Our Science days are filled with interactive labs and activities and it truly becomes their favorite day each week. Students create a notebook full of their year-long science inquiry that is personalized to them and they LOVE it!
